Through my talk with Brenda, I learned that my blog posts need to be more personal. Why I want this technology to be empathetic? what do I mean by empathy in this case? To answer her question:

I want to create empathy like when one brews their coffee everymorning. It’s a ritual and is an emotional satisfaction for the user. Just like a record player or a pull light switch. It’s all about the emotional feedback, that could also be an aspect of haptic feedback.

Talk to a stranger

First Stanger - I was fortunate enough that a friend connected me to Chen Chen, who is a PhD student at UCSD doing research in HCI in VR for medical usage. Speaking to him gave me a lot of clarity and my key takeaways were:

  1. Figuring out if I wanted to explore an idea/research or design/showcase a skill set. What was the goal of the research? To be an entrerprenure/ academic or to get a job?
  2. Pinch gesture as an HCI and the existing studies around self haptics. >Giving the user a sense of tangibility when you touch your self, as a feedback.
  3. Researching 2D interfaces that can be migrated as a 3D interface. Find out what product in today's world has the best haptics and interaction — apple watch is a very good example for 2D IXD in HCI.
  4. Gave me an Academic paper about “How to find needs”.
  5. Thinking about what apps will need a hand gesture.

Second Stranger - Rodel has been playing around with VR technology a lot over the years. He felt that VR technology in the past wasn’t immersive enough, however will be the future. He had very interesting points as we spoke through my idea:

  1. How do Gen-Z like their features and what impact it might have in the future interaction.
  2. What is haptic feed back in AR/ MR/ VR world right now? Think about body tracking, eye tracking. If there is an hadeware or not? — like a full body suit. Watch movies like Ready player 1 and Minority Report for inspiration on HCI & IXD.
  3. Toolkit and creating a collection of gestures was the strongest idea, according to him. Asked me to look into the first Microsoft operating system, to spark some ideas. how did bills think about organizing information and interactions, since he was the first.
  4. He game me Leap Motion to test out.

Hanging out with the area of interest

I started with a mindmap to jot dot my interests and ideas. Making a list of Topics that I was interested in. Thinking about their challenges. What I was interested in and why.
