Thesis #0.1 — Thought Ideation

As I think about this thesis, I dwell more and more on why I wanted to learn when I started this master’s in Interaction Design, and how I came here. I started my design journey as an industrial designer because I simply fell in love with physical products. If designed well a physical product can be emotional leaving the users to have a ritualistic experience with it.

Particularly, I have always been intrigued by people’s interaction with products and their surroundings. How their interactive approach is influenced by an existing notion of memory, sensory perception, intuition, and individual logic and reasoning.

Due to covid, we saw a rise in technology with everything becoming virtual. It accelerated that transition and exposed a need for responsive and interactive design in our new world of augmented reality, virtual reality and mixed reality. With these new breakthroughs dawning in technology design, I believe there are continuous gaps created in society. For example, how are we going to evoke the same tactile experiences for our virtual future?

The image cluster below represents a mindmap of my thoughts.

They range from AR to VR and now to Mixed reality.
  1. The use of gestures (the so-called touchpoints) for this technology and how it can be an intuitive interaction.
  2. Design a tool kit for micro-interactions for a particular use case. eg driving a car, shopping, planning your day, or even a navigation bar.
  3. Design an app for Hololens, Oculus, or Magic leap.

Designing for a truly multisensory experience for its user.
